Toldos Yeshurun is Shteiging Away

With Hashem's help, the New Year 5768 is beginning with two new projects at Toldos Yeshurun – the launching of the "Judaism Online" program, featuring live translations of the best Russian-speaking lecturers daily, and our Dinner in the USA which has now become an annual event.

The development and growth of Russian Jewry in Eretz Yisroel is not possible without support from America, and we hope that not only native American Jews, but American Jews of Russian origin as well will become partners in our work.

I would like to express my gratitude and wishes for success to my friend Yehuda Avrech who has organized this dinner, and who has taken upon himself the difficult task of "discovering America".

A year has passed since the last dinner, and I would like to tell you about the events that took place at Toldos Yeshurun in the meantime. It has been a full, busy year for Toldos Yeshurun, the Educational and Community Network for Russian Jewry under the leadership of Rav Ben Tzion Zilber shlit"a, the greatest Russian-speaking posek of our generation. It is impossible to name all of our activities, but we have put together a short summary of our most important activities for you:

Yeshivah: Of the over 40 young Russian-speaking boys who have been learning in the Toldos Yeshurun yeshivah this year, some have married and become avrechim while others have gone on to Israeli yeshivos such as Giv'at Shaul, Sha'arei Binah, Ateres Yisroel and others. We were very happy to greet ten boys from Germany in the yeshiva's summer camp.

Rabbinical Kollel: About twenty outstanding young Russian-speaking Rabbis continue their studies in the Rabbinical Kollel under the guidance of Rabbi Moshe Petrower, and many of them are already leaders of Russian-speaking communities in different cities of Israel today.

Communities: A new community has been founded in Arad, with a functioning shul, a daily daf yomi shiur, classes for women, shared Shabbos meals and other communal activities.

The community of the Hatikvah neighborhood in Southern Tel Aviv– also called the Harlem of Tel Aviv – has flourished. The community, under the guidance of Rav Shmuel Simantov, numbers 300 families whose activities include a synagogue, evening chavruta kollel, and classes for men and women. It is especially important to note the various activities for children.

The evening kollel network: More than 300 Russian-speaking avrechim are teaching in the evening chavruta kollelim from Haifa in the North to Ofakim in the South. The opening and establishment of such a chavrusa program in Beer Sheva under the leadership of an avrech from Ofakim, M. Raznov, is a big success.

The women's classes network: We have opened numerous new classes for young women in the cities of Ashdod, Rishon leTzion, Haifa, Beer Sheva and others, as well as a special program for the preparation of young women lecturers under Rebbetzin Chava Kuperman in Jerusalem.

The Jewish Family Project: This year, we have launched 1- and 2-day seminars under the direction of Rabbi Asher Kushnir for young Jewish men and women, respectively, who want to build a Jewish family in order to familiarize them with the basics of finding a mate and building a Jewish family. We hope to conduct such seminars twice a month in the future. Special seminars for Russian-speaking matchmakers have been launched this year as well, and new Jewish families are built monthly through our online Jewish matchmaking service for Russian-speakers.

Our website www.toldot.ru boasts various new programs and features that help many Russian-speaking Jews learn more about their tradition, acquaint them with the many facets of a Jewish life, and help them find a learning partner and take the next step in their Jewish education. In this way, hundreds of visitors learn Torah daily with the help of our website.

An interesting tendency in the life of Toldos Yeshurun is that new teachers who come into our network are our previous students who have made their first steps in Judaism at the night classes of Toldos Yeshurun, such as Daniel Ginsburg in Jerusalem, Moshe Lev in Ashdod, Yakov Vigoshin in Ashkelon, Yosef Kobelev with the internet chavrusa program, and others.

The Toldos Yeshurun office needs new telephone lines and phones. The phone calls just don't stop: Please send a Torah teacher to Kiryat Ata! We need a mohel in Demona! Where can I learn Torah? We want to invite you to our chuppah – thank you for introducing us! How can I go to a yeshiva to study? Tomorrow, we have a siyum in our kollel! I want to spend a shabbos with a religious family! We need Jewish books in Russian! I want to meet a modest Jewish girl!

It goes on and on, the wave of phone calls keeps increasing – Russian Jews are coming back to Torah.
