Toldot. What is Toldot?
Our website is called Toldot - “Toldot.ru”
(The Ashkenazi pronounciation is “Toldos” which has the same meaning, please check- if this works: www.ToldosYeshurun.org)
And what is “Toldot”? The Hebrew concept “Toldot” includes
different meanings for the word and so can be translated as: birth, history, family tree…
The word “Toldot” appears only 12 times
in the Torah and only one more time in the Na”ch. And each time it presents the more general,
more global meanings of world history:
- The Toldot (Story)
of the Heavens and the Earth - The Creation of the
World;
- This is the Toldot (Book of Genesis) - The Creation of Mankind;
- The Toldot (Story) of Noach
- The destruction of
Mankind and the rescue of Noach and his family;
- The Toldot
(Story) of the descendants of
Noach – The creation of the 70
nations and their spreading out across the face of the Earth;
- The Toldot
(Story) of Shem - Genealogic line from the children of
Noach to Abraham-our Forefather;
- The Toldot
(Story) of Terach – Terach decides to take his son Abraham and his
grandson Lot and go live in the land of Canaan – known today as Eretz
Yisroel, the Land of Israel;

Now about the name of our
organization - Toldot Yeshurun -
Yeshurun is one of the names given to the Jewish People, along
with the names Yaakov and Israel. The name Yeshurun is generally
connected with the present-day Jewish People
- when the Jews will return to their Homeland and live there in
peace. (An interesting fact is that
Russian speakers have difficulty in pronouncing the word “Yeshurun” and we are
called a variety of names from “Yoshurun” to “Eeshurim”).
So one can understand “Toldot Yeshurun”
as the final creation of the Jewish People.
And this is the work that we are involved in – since you cannot have a
Jewish People without knowledge of its roots, without its traditions, and
without its Judaism.
